"The Mirrors are Sheeted." By marge.

“The Mirrors are Sheeted”.

When I visited my paternal Grandmother,
The mirrors are sheeted,
“Vain child” is what she called me.

I am the product of a “mixed marriage”
Not of Race, but Religion.
When they married,
My mother did not “convert”.

She stayed the Methodist,
That she had always been.
As my father never went to Church,
Or, ever went to visit his mother.
My mum took me to Chapel,
Three times every Sunday.
And to visit my Grandma
Every Friday afternoon.

When the mirrors are totally covered,
Grandma makes me stand in front of her,
She is beautiful to look at, silver wavy hair,
She asks the weekly questions, always the same.
“Tell me, child, have you been to Church?”
“Tell me, child, have you been to Confession?”
Meaning, St. Patrick’s Catholic….

When I answer “No” to both questions,
I am poked sharply in the ribs
By Grandmas long black walking stick,
It has a fascinating mother of pearl handle.
How can such a beautiful thing,
Be so painful?

Then we have a cup of tea,
Made by my mother,
While Grandma tells me
How wonderful my Catholic Cousins are.
This weekly routine lasts,
Until I start work at 15.

Once, when I showed interest in the picture
Of the “Bleeding Heart of Jesus”,
Grandma gave me a picture of Jesus and
A Wooden Crucifix, “For my bedroom wall.”
The only time she ever gave me anything.

The only time she ever smiled at me
Was at my Wedding.
History had repeated itself,
I married a Catholic boy.
On the insistence of my
New Mother in Law that I convert
I had become a Catholic, and
My Grandma smiled at me.

NOTE: This poem was created using
the last line of Sylvia Plath's’ “Confusion”.

The last line is “The mirrors are sheeted”.

Mole Hills by marge.

I always watch the fields
And grass verges.
What am I looking for?
I look for molehills,
The outward evidence of
These tiny creatures
That will not be deterred.
Spending their lives in darkness,
Hardly ever seen.
But, we know where they have been!

They never seem to care,
Where their hills appear.
Now, after all the snow
Their hills seem bigger,
Better and more abundant.
They have not been held up
By the depth of snow.

It has been used to
Their advantage
Their dark kingdoms,
Enlarged, extended.
Tunnels never ended.

NOTE: This poem was written in
January 2010.

Pebbles by marge.

Skimming pebbles at the sea,
fun for you, fun for me.
A pebble nice, flat and level too,
aim, spin with a finger, watch it bounce.
Flying over the wave, not through.

Incoming tide, depositing its load of
rattling pebbles, prattling pebbles.
Sun shining on the wet stones
making them gleam like gems.
Sapphires, rubies, and diamonds among them.
Rough stones glinting gold and silver.
The sea moans gently, as it distributes
natures’ finest jewelry for our pleasure

such a simple delight, so hard to measure.

The Grass Cutter by marge, written in 2010.

The Councils’ grass cutting is
Now in full swing.
The Gang Mower is driven by a young man,
Who imagines himself, Jenson Button?
Driving a Formula 1 car.
He sweeps down the straight,
Goes wide on the corner.

This year's Spring has resulted in
Excess production of Dandelions, whose
Flowers are hastily and cruelly removed,
To be thrown high into the air.
For a few moments, the flower
Heads rained down on me.
Like bright, brilliant yellow confetti.

The driver swept on at maximum speed
To complete another lap of his
Imagined race track.
I stood there, like a deserted Bride
Left alone at the Altar.

Washing on the Lines by marge. No 8. in my series of poems on the theme of "Lines".

Most days I have the washing machine going
Sometimes even twice a day when beds need changing.

I like to hang them out on the line, well I would
Being a housewife for more years, I should because I could.

While I am outside pegging out, my neighbour, her next door,
She talks to her washing line, being deaf, what she says I am not sure.

I feel I am sensible, I talk to the plants in my garden
That has its use in encouraging them to grow. Pardon?

You need some more water? Just a minute, I won’t be long
These plants love the sun, they need water too to make them strong.

Finishing pegging out, I turn to watch it blowing on the line,
Sunshine and high winds, it will not be long before I bring them in!

It’s funny how one thing leads to another, washing is finished for now,

I do my walk around the garden. Gardening is more appealing somehow.

Graveyard by marge. Flash Fiction.

At dawn, the graveyard is alive with birds and small animals, which are

eating and scampering. Hoping they can avoid their predators. “In the

midst of life there is death” for the unlucky, or unwary.

Midday finds the graveyard alive with people passing through, en route

to Railway Station, shops, and Doctors. The dog walkers, leaving

deposits, they really should clear up.

As day progresses into evening, the graveyard becomes populated by

teenage drinkers, sex seekers, drug takers and dealers doing deals..

Bird and animal life settle down as darkness descends. Quiet stillness

takes over. This is the time for the dead to reclaim their territory,

tonight, gaining a new member. The body of a teenage girl is left

behind an elaborate Headstone, raped, strangled lying in a spreading

pool of blood.

Untitled Poem on Depression by Brian Mack.

Untitled Poem on Depression by Brian Mack.

If you could see inside their head
It looks like an untidy bed
Knotted, untidy and frayed
Pillows in the most awkward ways
But we don’t see that
You see a happy and joyous face
Tidy and smart
With no worries or troubles
Who will help them make my head bed
Who will tuck in the corners
Who will pump up my pillows
So They can have a restful head
Like they say don’t judge a book by its cover
Don’t ignore the words inside
Come read with me and share my book
Together we shall make more luck
Take off that persona
Stop hiding behind the smile
Remove the hidden agenda
Open your arms to the world
The sheets and pages
Will get untangled and ordered
Confusion and chaos will be no more
Just remember when I come knocking

Open the bloody door!!!
